Alright, let’s talk Shopify and invoices. You’d think something as basic as sending an invoice would be built-in, right? Nope. Shopify has other plans for your sanity. But don’t worry, I’ve been there, and I’ll walk you through the process step-by-step. It’s not hard—just a bit of a workaround.
Ready? Let’s do this.
1. First, We Need to Generate the Invoice
Here’s the deal: Shopify doesn’t generate invoices on its own. Yeah, it’s weird. But before you can send an invoice, you need a way to create one. That’s where the Shopify App Store comes in.
We’ll grab an app that does the heavy lifting for us.
2. Finding the Right App on the Shopify App Store
Open up the Shopify App Store and search for “invoice.” You’ll find a bunch of options, but for this tutorial, we’re using Tax Invoice (website).
Why this one?
They’ve got a free plan that’s actually useful (love those).
Setup is so easy, even your cat could probably figure it out.
3. Install and Set Up the Tax Invoice App
Once you install the app, head to the settings. You’ll want to:
Add your business info (name, logo, address—you know the drill).
If you deal with taxes, you can customize those too.
It’s all pretty straightforward.
4. Let the Invoices Fly
Now the fun part. Once everything’s set up, the app will automatically send invoices to your customers after they make a purchase. You don’t need to lift a finger.
Pro Tip: Do a test order first to make sure everything looks good. Nobody wants to send out an invoice that says “Your Business Name Here.”
5. Bonus Round: Add an Invoice Download Option to the Order Page
Want to get fancy? You can add a download button to the order confirmation page, so customers can grab their invoice whenever they want.
Just go to Online Store => Customize => Checkout and customer account => Order Status. There you will be able to add a url and add it anywhere you want.
6. Done and Dusted
That’s it! You’re now officially the invoice king (or queen) of your Shopify store. No more awkward emails like, “Hi, can I get a receipt?” It’s all automatic, baby.
If you get stuck, holler in the comments. I’ve probably made every mistake you’re about to make, so I’ve got tips for days.
Go forth and invoice!
P.S. Shoutout to Tax Invoice for making this process way less painful. Seriously, try their free plan—it’s a lifesaver.
